Babusar Landslides & closed roads tourists should avoid traveling in northern areas in  rains.

We have been provided basic amenities accommodation & food at one place on way to Skardu but now we can neither go forward nor backward. Landslides are happening along with continuous rains. It looks like we are going to be stuck here until rains stop.



This was said by Chaudhry Mr Gul Muhammad who was going to Skardu with his friends from Lahore.


Chaudhry Gul Mohammad along with his companions and other tourists have-been staying at a place near Rondo district for about three days now.

With the help of local administration & people Chaudhry Gul Mohammad and his associates had a place to hide their heads and basic amenities were available, but the aspiring tourists going to Gilgit via Mansehra District were not so lucky on the way to Babu Sir Top because they had to go there. Tourists were stranded for at least a day due to road closures due to rain & bad weather.


Tariq Khan from Peshawar says We were not surprised when we started walking a little further from Naran. It started snowing &  when we reached near Babu Sir Top  traffic was blocked. At first it was thought that this traffic would open up & we would be able to move on. But unfortunately that did not happen & we had to spend the whole day in the car.


Not only tourists but also locals of Skardu are worried about this situation. According to local journalist Rajab Qamar road closures due to bad weather & rains are likely to lead to shortages of food medicine and petrol in Skardu.


This situation is being caused by the recent pre monsoon rains after the end of the drought. According to  Gilgit Baltistan administration  road connecting Gilgit to Skardu is currently closed from various places due to landslides while Babu Sir Top Road has been reopened.


According to the Meteorological Department, torrential rains have entered the upper central parts of the country since Monday, during which landslides and floods could occur in many cities and areas with heavy rains while the Gilgit Baltistan Authority has issued a landslide warning. Have done



Where is the risk of rain and landslides?



According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department most of the rains are expected in the northern parts of the country Gilgit Baltistan and central areas including the federal capital Islamabad Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chitral Buner Shangla Dir Swat Kohistan Mansehra Abbottabad.   Swabi Peshawar Nowshera Mardan haripur Charsadda Bajaur Mohmand Khyber Karam Kohat Bani  Lakki Marwat Dera Ismail Khan & Waziristan.


According to the meteorological department, Punjab, RawalpindiGalyat Murree Attock Chakwal Jhelum Mianwali Sargodha Khushab Layyah Bhakkar DG Khan Hafizabad Faisalabad Mandi Bahauddin Jhang Toba Tek Singh . Pre monsoon rains are also expected in Sialkot Lahore Sheikhupura Kasur Sahiwal  okara Pakpattan Bahawalnagar & Multan.


Rain is also expected in Bhimber Mirpur Bagh Poonch Havelian Hatian Kotli Muzaffarabad & Neelum Valley areas of Pakistan administered Kashmir.


Clouds are also expected in Sherani zhob Musa Khel Kohlu &  Barkhan areas of northeastern Balochistan. Rains are also expected in Astor Ghizer Gilgit Hunza &  Skardu areas of Gilgit Baltistan.



The Gilgit Baltistan Disaster Management Authority NDMA has said in its notice that the public is advised to refrain from traveling in rivers streams rivers & mountainous areas. Similarly there are risks of landslides in different places.


According to Deputy Commissioner Skardu Karim Dad Skardu Road was closed in many places due to rains but in some places obstacles have been removed while work on clearing the road is in progress.

Deputy Chief Minister Skardu Karim Dad says that the administration of Skardu and Gilgit Baltistan is trying its best to provide complete facilities to the tourists and is using its full potential but at present due to road closures and landslides in the country due to pre monsoon rains. The cause is an emergency.
