Former DG ISI General (retd) Zaheer-ul-Islam announces support for PTI candidate: I am not a politician I am really neutral.

On the other hand Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf PTI central leader Fawad Chaudhry while talking to Dawn newspaper has denied news of Zaheer-ul-Islam joining PTI.

Former DG ISI General Zaheerul Islam has-been circulating on social networking sites since yesterday.

Retired Pakistani army generals have-been in the news & on social media for past few months. This is because of their political affiliations or non affiliations and their affiliation with current military leadership.

A video of him speaking at a PTI Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf political rally has surfaced. As soon as the video came out there were comments on whether he had formally joined the PTI.

Fawad Chaudhry has said that General retd Zaheer-ul-Islam had attended a political rally in support of the PTI candidate in Punjab b elections. There is no truth in these rumors that General retd Zaheer-ul-Islam has joined PTI. He was only expressing his support for pakistan Tehreek Insaf candidate who is a relative of retired general.

Reports so far are that political event was taking place in PP- 7 Rawalpindi constituency of Punjab. Tehreek Insaf leader Sadaqat Abbasi tweeted and said that a large gathering of dignitaries was held at the residence of General retd Zaheer-ul-Islam in Motor Kahuta in which support was announced for PTI candidate Col retd Shabir Awan.

Despite this there is a lot of discussion on social media about the video & photos of event.

In the video of the event General retd Zaheer-ul-Islam can be heard speaking and saying I want to say that I am not a politician I am actually neutral. I'm talking to you in a completely apolitical way said David Cook chief of The Christian Science Monitors Washington bureau.

Gen (retd) Zaheer-ul-Islam also said in his speech that now is perhaps the time for us to move beyond communities & regions and think about the development & prosperity of the country.

We do not have to see who the candidates are we have to see what system we have to vote for & that system we see in PTI he said.

Commenting on the issue one user wrote Now that General Zaheer-ul-Islam has entered regular politics Main Nawaz Sharif should release the audio that he listened to General Raheel Sharif.

Similarly another user wrote sarcastically I reached the place where the yeast was . DG ISI General (retd) Zaheer-ul-Islam has joined PTI. Witnessing the soil of the homeland .

Ali Raza account tweeted that Lieutenant General (retd) Zaheerul Islam is a retired army officer. Like retired General Qadir Baloch & Lieutenant General (retd) Abdul Qayyum they have every right to be involved in politics.

It should be noted that retired General Abdul Qayyum & Qadir Baloch are both very active in the political arena.

The same thing was written by a Twitter user named Muhammad Bakhsh Ronjho & he said that more than ² years have passed since he retired from the army and now he has democratic right to express his political views openly.

Similarly an account named Muhammad Jameel Akhtar thanked him for supporting PTI.

Who is Lieutenant General (retd) Zaheerul Islam?

Lieutenant General (retd) Zaheerul Islam name came to the fore when he was appointed head of Pakistan Central Intelligence Agency CIA in 2012.

On the one hand head of this agency is considered to be the strongest post after the Army Chief & on the other hand political situation in 2013 and 2014 became such that the name DG ISI was heard again & again.

Speaking of his military career General (retd) Zaheer-ul-Islam of 55th Long Course of the Pakistan Army belonged to the Punjab Regiment. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in 2010 after which as a 3 star general he commanded the corps for two years till 2012 & then on staff duty for the next 2 years he was posted in ISI.

Prior to that he was the GOC of Murree and also commanded the brigade in Siachen. His father also belonged to Punjab Regiment.

While he is mentioned in speeches and interviews of various politicians including the PML-N leadership he has also graced some books including the book The Battle for Pakistan by Shuja Nawaz brother of former Army Chief Asif Nawaz. Is.

On page 262 of this book referring to his conversation with Richard Olson former US ambassador to Pakistan Shuja Nawaz writes that the US ambassador told him In September 2014 we were informed that General Zaheer-ul-Islam planned a military coup in Pakistan. But the then army chief General Raheel Sharif did not allow the plan to flourish and removed the ISI chief from his post. General Zaheer was also in touch with the corps commanders and if he had the support of Raheel Sharif government would have been overthrown.

He had said that during the sit-ins of PTI and Awami Tehreek in Islamabad in 2014 the then head of Pakistan ISI Lt. Gen. Zaheerul Islam had hatched a conspiracy to assassinate the military & civilian leadership. They wanted to remove and occupy the country.

According to Mushahidullah Khan the conspiracy was uncovered when Pakistan's civilian intelligence agency Intelligence Bureau recorded a telephone conversation between Lt. Gen. Zaheerul Islam in which he was instructing various people on how to spread chaos during the sit-in. And to occupy the Prime Minister's House.

He had said that on evening of 28 August Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had given him the audiotape during a meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif.

General Raheel Sharif was shocked to hear this tape. At same time he summoned General Zaheer-ul-Islam to Prime Minister in the same meeting & played the same tape again and asked him if it was his voice after General Zaheer confirmed that it was his voice. General Raheel asked General Abbasi to leave the meeting.

Mushahidullah Khan had said that some very effective & senior generals were involved in this conspiracy including Lieutenant General Zaheer-ul-Islam but General Raheel & the Pakistan Army as an institution were not involved in this conspiracy.

A year earlier on 5 September 2014, Reuters news agency had also published a report in which it was said that 5 senior officers of the Pakistan Army believed that this was the time for Nawaz Sharif to resign the army to seize power. However then army chief General Raheel Sharif had opposed any such move.

Lt. Gen. (retd) Zaheerul Islam has denied the reports and allegations while the Army Public Relations Directorate ISPR has also vehemently denied the allegations.

The then DG ISPR said about the alleged audio that the news about the audio recording under discussion in media was baseless & untrue.

Recently country Federal Minister for Information Pervez Rashid had also denied the statement of Senator Mushahidullah while the Prime Minister House also took note of the statement of Senator Mushahidullah. Mushahidullah was later fired for making a statement about DG ISI Zaheerul Islam.
