Jinnah International Airport: A few days ago a photo was shared on Twitter social media which showed a lot of chocolates being taken out of a passenger luggage at Karachi airport & it was said that these chocolates were confiscated by Pakistan customs officials at Karachi Jinnah airport. has taken. It is to be noted that government of Pakistan has recently banned import of various products to Pakistan to reduce the country import bill & this step was taken after the latest announcement of government by customs officials.
In addition to government ban on imported cars & mobile phones there are about 40 items that are subject to ban including luxury goods.
Explaining on social media after confiscation of goods by Pakistanis from abroad at Karachi MA Jinnah airport by customs officials Pakistan Finance Minister Muftah Ismail said Pakistan Federal Government has banned import items of non essential items into Pakistan. Has been imposed and in this regard government has stepped up action against professional consignments.
He said there was a fear that Pakistan government ban on the import of some non essential items could increase smuggling of these items into Pakistan.
He clarified that ordinary citizens would not be disturbed in this regard.
The importation of goods into Pakistan is regulated by the Customs Act & importation of personal goods from abroad for business & commercial purposes in addition to those imported from abroad is also covered under this Act. Goes

Reacting Twitter user Hashim Adam said in his tweet What does finance minister mean by certain things because he has-seen pictures of normal amount of chocolate coming to Pakistan which cannot be 4 commercial purposes.
Television actor and comedian Mr Shafaat Ali tweeted Due to SRO on imported goods chocolates & other items are being taken out of people personal belongings even from handbags.
He Also said the ban should be limited to goods imported for commercial purposes.

I agree with other things but the ban on chocolate is ridiculous said Ayesha Yaqub a female consumer. When you take 10 kg for friends & family nothing happens. I have four nieces and nephews my sisters these are people for whom I carry Pakistani chocolates from Dubai. Restrict rest of the items but don't apply to food.

What items have been seized at Karachi Jinnah International Airport so far?
A statement issued by the Collectorate of Customs MA Jinnah International Airport Karachi said that food drink was searched by the customs staff during the search of luggage of passengers coming from Risky Destination under the Import Policy Order and Customs Act. 76 kg of products 127 kg of fruit 42 kg of sanitary ware 213 mobile phones & 96 pairs of branded shoes were seized.
Pakistan government has banned import of luxury items including cars mobile phones dried fruits household items personal use weapons shoes decorative items, door and window frames sausages frozen meat fruits. Carpets tissue paper furniture & make up.
In addition banned items include goggles cigarettes Bakery chocolate products & Shampoo musical instruments.
It should be noted that import of jelly Jam shaving equipment mattresses sleeping bags, heaters kitchen utensils ice Cream juices sanitary items leather goods is also prohibited.
Mr Qamar Thalo a spokesman for Customs Karachi told British News Agancy that seized goods were consignments which they had brought in large numbers. He said that no action has-been taken against the real passengers. Qamar Thalo said that if someone is bringing 20 pairs of shoes He must be doing work of shipment & this is a commercial quantity.
When asked about risky destination', he replied that the countries from which cargoes bring more goods, such as Dubai & China etc therefore more attention is paid to travelers coming from there.
He cited example of a ban on betel leaves from Sri Lanka.
What does the Customs Act in Pakistan say in this regard?
Import and export of goods in Pakistan is regulated by the Customs Act. The contents of Customs Act on Federal Board of Revenue website include personal items that travelers are allowed to bring with them:
Apparel, toiletries & electric shavers baby toy toys push carts wheelchairs for personal use passenger medals, trophies and prizes, irons hairdresser hairdressers 2 hundred cigarettes or Fifty cigars or 5 hundred grams of manufactured Mobile Phones tobacco wristwatches laptops & accessories.
Mr Dr Ikram-ul-Haq, an expert on tax matters in Pakistan told British News Agancy that a passenger can bring with him personal items which are permitted in Customs Act.
He said that earlier passengers used to bring items under the gift scheme but then rules were changed as the items brought under this scheme had started commercial use. The things that are allowed for personal use cover the need properly.
He said that now the import of mobile phones has-been banned. However in past if a person brought a mobile phone for himself from outside his registration with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority was mandatory otherwise the phone would be confiscated within three months. Used to close
Mr Dr. Ikram-ul-Haq said that consignments are actually working in such a way that they bring so many items that there is no justification for their personal use & customs authorities take action against them.
