The ongoing controversy over hijab in the Indian state of Karnataka is not going away and a new video has surfaced showing a student wearing burqa and niqab being harassed by several students wearing saffron shawls.

The video, which went viral on social media, was posted by Alt News founder Muhammad Zubair with the words: "When a Muslim girl arrives at PES College, many students wearing saffron shawls are harassing her."

For the last one and a half months in Karnataka, there has been a dispute between the students and the administration over hijab in several colleges and the matter is now in the High Court. But in recent days, it has come to light that the hijab is now being compared to saffron shawls, which reflect the divisions of Indian society along religious lines.


The video, which went viral on social media, shows a student in a black burqa driving a scooter to PES College Bangalore and a group of hundreds of students waving saffron shawls as they walk towards the building. They start harassing her by chanting slogans of 'Allah Akbar' in response to which the lone student chants 'Allah Akbar' and says in Karnataka language 'Don't we have the right to wear hijab?'

Even after the student walked into the building, the students with saffron shawls were constantly chanting slogans of 'Jai Shri Ram' which teachers or administration officials were seen trying to stop. But when stopped, these students start shouting slogans with more enthusiasm.


As of the publication of this article, the video has been viewed by over 2.7 million people and is a hot topic on social media.

It is said that after the hijab controversy started in India, some political parties have allegedly distributed saffron shawls among the students and they are stirring up the controversy.

In a video posted by Indian journalist Naveedita Narenjan Kumar, MGM College students can be seen carrying saffron shawls. According to Nodita, the shawls were allegedly distributed by Hindutva organizations.

Naveedita has posted several videos and photos of the riots at the MGM College over the hijab controversy, in which hundreds of students wearing saffron shawls and hats chanted slogans against the burqas and hijab.

In another photo, teachers at Edge GM College are asking hijab-wearing students to leave the school.

Mufti further said that such incidents should not be seen as mere incidents as the BJP hopes that such incidents will help them win the UP elections.


Former Chief Minister of Indian-administered Kashmir Omar Abdullah also shared the video with the words, "Hatred against Muslims has become commonplace in today's India." We are no longer a nation that celebrates diversity, we want to separate people and punish them.


Indian journalist Rana Ayub wrote, "Thousands fight against a woman wearing hijab". Tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rana asks, "I thought you were a supporter of women's emancipation and wanted to educate them."

According to Indian media, all schools and colleges in the Indian state of Karnataka have been closed for three days after today's riots.

Since last month, eight female college students have not been able to attend classes for several weeks due to the crackdown on hijab by the administration of ODP's government pre-university college.
