There are reports of a military coup in the African country of Sudan, and several leaders of the interim government, including the country's prime minister, have been detained.

The army reportedly detained four ministers, including Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk, among other leaders, shortly before Monday morning.

The military has not commented, but pro-democracy groups have called for street protests.

In a message on the Sudanese Ministry of Information's Facebook page, Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk also called on the people to hold peaceful demonstrations and "protect the revolution." The prime minister has claimed that the country's forces have detained him at his home and that he is being pressured to speak out in support of the military coup.

Another message from the Ministry of Information said that he had been transferred to an unknown location after the Prime Minister refused to issue such a statement.

Eyewitnesses in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, say internet services have been suspended, while images of angry people burning tires on the streets have surfaced on social media.

An eyewitness told Reuters that army and paramilitary forces had been deployed in the city to curb civilian traffic.

In addition, Khartoum Airport has been closed and flights have been suspended.

Sudan's pro-democracy group has called on its supporters to resist any military coup.
